Chemistry Prelim 1

Topics tested:

Chapter 5 Atomic Structure
Chapter 6 Ionic Bonding
Chapter 7 Covalent Bonding
Chapter 8 Writing Equations
Chapter 9 The Mole
Chapter 10 Chemical Calculations
Chapter 11 Acids and Bases
Chapter 12 Salts (excluding QA)
Chapter 13 Oxidation and reduction
Chapter 19 Ammonia
Chapter 17 Energy Changes
Chapter 18 Speed of Reaction
Chapter 20 The Atmosphere and the Environment.

Here is a sampling of questions that may come out, considering that the paper is only 45 minutes and that topics will be squashed together in the same question.

1. Know how to draw diagrams to show the bonding between atoms in compounds.
2. Form an equation based on given information.
3. Explain how salts are prepared using titration, precipitation and filtration. (SPA and group 1 salts use titration, precipitation all non-soluble salts, filtration all soluble salts)
4. Know the various types of substances that acids and bases can react with and the products of such reactions.
5. Graph sketching. (especially important for the newer chapters)
6. The common favourite type of mole question: A substance contains 25% Hydrogen, 42% Oxygen and 33% Carbon by mass. Find its molecular formula.

It is a must that you practice the TYS. It will help you a lot. Be sure to revise for the Chem SPA that is coming in 2 weeks time. It is on the topic Metals and could be on: Displacement reactions, acid+metal reactions, metal+water reactions etc.
