Ok I was a bit surprised that it came early, but the O level Certificates are ready for collection from the general office, before 5pm on school days (and also school holidays). The black file containing testimonials and stuff is NOT ready yet though.

First Term Break

Hey guys,

hope everything is going on fine in your JC lives. This blog has been dead for ages, so it's about time I revive it with a short post =P.

Do remember to go back to Cat High and visit once in a while. Those of you who are already peer tutoring won't have problems with that. Otherwise, find a day when school ends early and hop by Cat High =P

As for O level certificates, from what I asked Mr Yong some time ago, the Certificates for O level results (Official ones, the paper slip you got on 11th January is NOT a certificate) will be ready for collection from the school sometime in late Term 2. The teachers will keep you guys informed.

So there, make full use of your first term break, to catch up on studies, go out with friends, rest etc.

Dear Qin En and everyone,
Remember that you can be happy and successful in any of the JCs you have been posted to, not just RJC or HCJC or VJC or NJC and that being able to adjust fast and well to your new environment will stand you in very good stead for success in the A Levels.
I am happy for those who are successful in your appeal because you have your wish fulfilled. However, for those who are disappointed, maybe you will look back in 2 years' time and feel grateful you did not succeed. Trust in God as He may close certain doors for you and open others in your best interest.
Life is full of surprises and silver linings so look out for them. A positive attitude in facing life's challenges and surprises makes all the difference in your happiness and success. The grass on the other side of the fence always looks greener but really, it isn't.
In my current illness, I have been surprised by the goodness of God in His personal attention to us mere mortals as individuals and I feel so grateful to Him for concrete evidence of His care. Another day I shall tell you all about how He has surprised me. Thanks indeed for praying for me as I believe that some of these surprises are the result of the prayers of my friends, relatives and students like you because His answers come for prayers I never even uttered!
So dear gentlemen, look forward to your very short 2 years in JC with gratitude and excitement whichever JC you have been posted to. Do not waste time being unhappy or disappointed. There is a Chinese saying that says that every good thing has a negative/bad side to it just as every bad thing has a surprising silver lining. I believe this from 60 years of life as a human being. Think of all the poor people who have suffered terribly, such as the victims of the Haiti earthquake and the fact that Singapore JCs are all really good. What the JCs are like depend on people like you. Even individuals like you can liven and inspire your tutorial groups. Try it, it is really true. One or two encouraging and enthusiastic students can change the quality of discussions and make the tutors enthusiastic too.

Subject Combis

Over the next few days most of you will be selecting your subject combinations. A few pointers:

Strike a balance between choosing subjects you really like and subjects that will be useful in university admission to the course of your choice.

Do not let your choices be influenced by people around you. You are the one that's studying. So it should be ultimately your choice.

Consult the subject syllabuses on www.seab.gov.sg website so that you can choose your subjects wisely and know what to expect to learn in the lessons.

PCME is the most versatile combination but you need to think about whether you will enjoy Economics or not. Economics is new to everyone so there will be a learning curve.

Last of all, beware of the deadline for submitting subject combinations, ESPECIALLY if the process is done online. Do not wait till last minute as the server will definitely lag.

JAE Results and Appeal

JAE results will be out by the modes of sms, the internet or by telephone. I suppose most of you have supplied a mobile phone number so expect an sms on the morning of Wednesday the 27th.

For those who want to appeal, you will need to refer to the websites of the relevant JCs for information on how to appeal. Some JCs will require you to fill in an online form, and submit some documents in person at their general office. Others will just require you to print and fill in a form and submit it at their general office. Either way, you will require photocopies of O level results slip, report card (Prelim results), CCA records, testimonials and supporting documents. Please prepare these photocopies NOW if you are expecting to appeal. Deadline for appeals depends on the JC, but is usually either the end of the working day on the 27th, or lunchtime of the 28th.

Qin En has mentioned about writing appeal letters before. If you are writing one (and you should), please have it proofread by classmates and also by a teacher if possible.

The first day of JC will be 28th January. You will report to the JC that you have been posted to even if you are appealing for another JC.

Appeal and Subject Combos

Hey people,

many of u have been asking the following questions, so i will summarise them in this short FAQ:

1. JAE results are not released yet. Can I appeal?

Ok, You cannot officially appeal now, since the appeal forms are not out yet from respective JCs. However, you should and must start preparation.

2. On JC websites, appeal attempts only need CCA records, prelim results, etc. Why must I write a letter / submit my portfolio?

Chances are, you are appealing to the top JCs. If these JCs were so easy to enter, do you need to appeal? Think of how many appeal applicants there will be. More than your friends, people from all other schools. WHAT THE HECK IS GONNA GIVE YOU THE ADVANTAGE??? WHAT THE HECK IS GONNA MAKE YOU DIFFERENT??? WHY THE HECK SHOULD THE JC TAKE YOU IN?

The answer to that is self-evident. The letter / portfolio will give you that added advantage.

3. Why so hurry? I can do all these later!

Ok, go ahead and slack, and work your heads off once your JAE results release and you only have a couple of days to get everything done. Chances are that you work is slipshot and sucky.

4. How do I make sure that my letter / portfolio is good?

Well, you can always email it to some of ur friends , (INCLUDING ME), then I can help you edit them... There wont be much major changes, just the way you put it. What i offer you is that I can make you sound more "lucrative" (sorry for making you sound so sleazy and cheap), but that is how things work. Your choice, your decision, your fate. 5. Which subject combo should I take?

Depends on what you want. If you are going for Science and want to be part of the majority ( I mean really majority), go for PCME or BCME. For those pple who dont know what this means, go fly a kite. Just joking...each alphabet stands for the subject. P for Physics, C for Chem, M for Maths, E for Econs, B for Bio.

The PCME and BCME combos are the most common in RJ and HCI; that I am sure of. Other JCs, i not so sure. PCME is the most generalisitc course...take that and you got almost ALL options open you. It is like the universal, non-specialist. BCME will limit your options to science and research, and without chemistry, trying to go into engineering is very hard. But the plus point is that most girls are going for BCME, so if you take that, you probably be in a class majority girls.

AND PLEASE FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE, DONT ASK IF YOU NEED TO TAKE H2 MATHS. It is the most important and layman subject. For the year of 2009, only 2 JC2s out of 1500 RJC students do not take maths. Thats like 0.005%. You wanna be part of that, go ahead. And without maths, good luck to you. You can tear out three quarters of any university prospectus.

For Arts people, common combos are Geog, History, Econs, Maths. Interested with other Lit subjects, sub it in with either Geog or Hist.

If you have lost your JAE booklet, download a soft copy from here.

Follow the instructions on the MOE letter/Form A that you have been given. It's advisable to make photocopies of all your slips of paper for safekeeping in the future as well.

Anyway, for your reference, this is a compiled list of JC open houses for 13th January (Wednesday). NJC is not included because registration for the tours has already closed and visits to it are by tour only. VJC already had their open house last October and will not have one this season.

Gentlemen, Welcome back from the Judegement Day

We have been through a lot I must say. For some of us, it has been exhilarating and joyful. For some of us, it has been disappointment. As much as we have prepared ourselves for the outcomes, we still are reluctant to accept reality at times. Especially when you are feeling down.

But what i want to say is all of us have finished the fight. We have done extremely well, as a class and as individuals. You have all made it, and we have all finished the good fight.

So now, what's done is done. But the purpose of me writing here is not to console or encourage you. What I want is to encourage ALL of you to soar further and try your best.

Now is JAE. Many of us with varied results do not know whether to go for the top JCs, even if our results dont allow us to. My verdict is: GO FOR IT!

We dont give a shit about how you did. If you think you have the chances of getting into the JC of your choice (be it RJ, HC, VJ), apply and appeal for it. Don't let the opporunity for your chacne to be in the place where you want to be slip through your fingers.

There is NO HARM in trying. Even if you fail to appeal, at least you can look back without regrets and declare that you have exhausted all possibilities. YOu dont want to regret in time to come and say: Why didnt I not give myself a chance.

So go ahead, follow your heart and strive towards your dream JC. YOu can do it. All you have to do is to now collate all your achievements and portfolio, and SUBMIT THE PORTFOLIO TO THE SCHOOL YOU WANT TO APPEAL IN ASAP.

Dont wait until the posting come out. You can imagine the floods of appeals comiong in to the top JCs. So send in your portfolio and application to your JC immediately so that they will keep you fresh in mind and you will gain an advanatage.

Remember, your advantage comes from being first, so go ahead and JUMP for the JC you want!

Last but not least, May the Force be with You, and GOD Bless all of you now and forever. Some of our paths may meet again, some may not, but always remember that we walked through 2 years of the most memorable journey of our lives as one class, one body.

Admin Matters

1. Assembly time is 2pm on Monday. Should be school hall. To make admin easier, bring along your JAE booklet, EZ link/NRIC, stationary etc. Have your haircuts as well and remember what Qin En said in the previous post.

2. The JC Admissions Exercise begins Monday and ends on Friday. Information on how to submit your JC applications is in your JAE booklets. Application will be done online. Please fill up the worksheet in ur JAE booklet before registering online as you will be logged out after 15 minutes of inactivity. JC application closes 4pm Friday.

3. JC posting results will be released on 27th January by SMS, telephone or on the web, depending on what you opt for and what details you submit on registration.

Gentlemen,

This is what I really feel, and think it is the most important post on this blog ever so far. So please read it slowly and mull upon it.

Monday, 11 January will be the day our O level results will be released. We all feel nervous and excited now that we are so close, yet so far to reaching out to our fate.

And we all know that some of us will be delighted, some of us will be dejected. But what I would really like to tell all is that WE HAVE TRIED OUR BEST. For all the practice and study we have done over the last two years, it was to culminate to the final battle. The final battle is now over, and the battle's results are to be released.

I would like all of us to know that we have already put in our all, and just remember this one phrase before you wear on the Catholic High School uniform one last time on Monday:

Don't Cry because It's Over, Smile Because it Happened.

Yes, it may sound very idealistic and what I say might be forgotten in view of the results on Monday, but for those who do not achieve what they wanted, just remember to be strong and never give up. Tough times don't last, tough people do.

As a foreword, to those who achieved stellar results, bask in your happiness on Monday, but be aware of those around you. You have achieved success, and we all congratulate you whole-heartedly. But do reach out and help your peers who need the support and encouragement.

To those who have achieved results that you consider moderate, also be joyful, and know that you have crossed a hurdle in your life journey and should continue to strive hard.

To those who have not achieved results they wanted (I am being very careful with what I say here), just remember that Tough Times Don't Last, Tough People do. You have crossed the hurdle with difficulty, but know that this will only make you stronger. He who can last and perservere will soar.

With all this said, once again, it might be all forgotten on Monday. But i still really hope that we can be strong and stay strong.

Last Post of the Year (Probably?)

Hey guys,

As we come to the end of 2009, I'd like to thank all of you guys for making 4-3 one of the best classes we've ever been in. I mean, come to think of it, after endless days of mugging, lessons and staying back to do trial papers, as well as outings, fun activities etc. we've probably forged really strong friendships between one another. Time has passed by really quickly and it's sad to say we won't be a class anymore soon.

As you pass on to the next phase of life, do remember all your friends in 4-3. They'll probably be lifelong friends, alongside your future JC friends. When you're in tough times, recall the joy we've had together as a class. The good feeling of nostalgia will really motivate you.

During the next few weeks, there will be a lot of important events, firstly, the class chalet and then the release of O level results. Do take these opportunities to thank your friends and teachers for the wonderful times we've had together. Do treasure these last few moments, because once we disperse, we may never get together again as one class.

It's a bittersweet feeling, wanting to go into the future but not wanting to leave behind your companions and friends, but this is life.

Of course, to end off on a lighter note, I'd like to wish everyone a very happy new year. Make new year's resolutions too and start life anew =P

Yea so the blog has been dead for about two weeks now. How's things going on during the holidays? There's not much I want to say, but make sure you do get the most of these two months. That is, to get plenty of rest, engage in meaningful activities and pursue your interests.

Updates: Dates probably changed to 6 to 8 January 2010, venue is Aloha Loyang. The place we're booking is like uber big (can easily fit 20-30 people) and apparently there's a pool close to it. Booking of chalet is fully sponsored by class fund, and the food will be, as far as possible, sponsored by the class fund as well (like maybe a barbeque). Please confirm wether you're going or not with choon searn, ngiap seng or me (preferably kcs). Please do try to make it since it's probably our last class event before release of the O's results =). The fight has finished, and it's time for us to relax =)

Stuff to know

1. Graduation Night

Grad Nite is on Monday evening, 6.30pm to about 11pm. The venue is Swissotel Merchant Court, just immediately next to CLARKE QUAY MRT station. Please dress decently in semi-formal attire. In case Grad Nite ends late, you can take Night Buses. Clarke Quay MRT station is served by MANY Night Buses (1N,2N,3N,4N,5N,6N, NR6, NR8) so you should be able to find your way back.

2. Class Chalet

Class Chalet will be held on the first week of January before the release of O level results, at Aloha Changi (near Changi Village). We haven't booked yet but we will confirm the booking soon. The chalets at Aloha Changi are HUGE (much larger than Pasir Ris Costa Sands ones) so accommodation is not a problem. Keep watching this blog for details.

3. Travelling in Winter 2009

If you will be travelling out this winter, especially to North America, Europe and North Asia, please go for a flu vaccination (sorry H1N1 jab is only for folks 18 and above). My doctor says that the normal flu vaccination already contains a different strain of H1N1, so it will offer some immunity. Of course, if you have already contracted H1N1 before, then its not so necessary cause you're already immune to it. It costs about $30, or less if you go to a polyclinic.

4. O Level Results

To be released anytime between 12th and 14th January according to SEAB.

Basically i have checked out the Changi Bungalow. Its double storey, comes with kitchen bbq pit etc. Cost $120 per night. 2nd - 5th january if its flexible with you guys. do let me know what dates you guys are available. (:

对于卷一，我觉得先写应用文为好。

l 安排好内容，把长度控制在2页内，但就算要超过了也顺其自然，不要为了缩短而写得简略。

l 一定要复习好格式，因为那是送分的。

l 同时，你认为对方知道得比你清楚的东西不要提，或者用一个短句带过：如给教育局长提关于改善CCA的建议，不要提CCA的好处…

l 永远跟着题目走，看看往年的题目，最后一句话通常告诉你要写什么

l 不要写演讲词，因为其他定演讲词的同学大多是基础特别好的，这样体现不出你们的优势。

l 对于公函，在开头，结尾，恭维话的时候找机会连到题目上，特点是恭维话，要和对方的身份联系紧密

l 对于私函，注重突出聊天的口气，不要听着像讲道理

l 时间应控制在45分钟以内

作文

l 报章报道的题好像变得越来越难写，如果拿不准的话，不要硬着头皮写，可以尝试议论文。议论文其实是缩略的报章报道，更短更好写，而且能省时间推敲词句

l 但如果报章报道好写的话，还是写吧，毕竟练得多，更安全

l 除非报章报道和议论文都不好写，我觉得不要尝试记叙文，容易偏题，后果不堪设想。

l 关键词用字典查一下，能更好地理解题目

l 一定要记住报章报导不同类的格式：特别是看法和做法，容易出；个案类一定要扣着个案答，其实就是以个案为例子的现象类。

l 引言一定要写，因为它不难，反驳段如果拿不准可以不写，写不好反而丢分

l 不要太过重视表达，牵强地加入俗语。把精力放到审题，思路，内容上，写得有逻辑就好，内容分高表达自然就高

l 写完后如果有剩时间检查，改错别字，不要改内容，把卷面弄乱得不偿失。

l 如果时间不够，跳过反驳段或错误现像产生的原因，建议和结尾一定要定

l 结尾要扣紧主题

l 写报章报道一定要列提纲，写出个大部分的内容，理清丝路。例如看法类，许多人认为新加坡教育制度培养出的是没有创造力的学生，提纲可是这样列：

Ø 立场：反对

Ø 看法原因：1. 课外活动，发展专长，比赛

2. 课堂讨论

3. 灵活的试题

4．……（选三个最好的）

Ø 反驳段：对方认为应试性过强，学习只为了准备考试

反驳：考试已是最公平的选拔手段，学习过程中就有创造性

既然教育系统没有问题，为什么许多学生学成后没有创造力呢

Ø 错误现像产生的原因：问题不出现在教育制度，而是在：老师教学方法，同学学习态度，家长的心态……（这一段一定要深思熟虑，觉得没有内容写可以不要写）

Ø 建议

卷二

1. 综合填空在上下文找线索，如果不能确定，把自己看第一眼时觉得对的答案填是去。除非非常确定其他三个选项是错的，不要轻易选自己不认识的词。

2. 阅读理解（一）永远回文中找答案

3. 阅读理解（二）

l 不要照抄原文，把原文的句子稍改一下，作为答案：Always answer the question。

l 如果可能，标好答案，第一，第二，第三，改卷时不会漏点

l 在原文的基础上再加上几句自己的理解

l 说感想的题，分三步答：先解释文章的中心，再谈感想，再联系例子

l 举例子的题一定要详细

下面是几个简单的修辞手法，希望有用：

1.比喻（形像生动）

（1）明喻：有比喻词“像”等：如母爱像阳光（simili）

（2）暗喻：用“是”代替比喻词：家庭是心灵的港湾

（3）借喻：没有比喻词：在学校，辛勤的园丁（老师）浇灌美丽的花朵（学生）(metaphor)

2.拟人（personification）：树在风中舞蹈着（把物体写活）

3.排比：相同句型重复3句以上（有气势，有说服力）

4.夸张：我的心一下碎成了几千片（把情感彻底表达出来）

l 在解释题中，如果有两层意思的，要解释表面的和深层的；不一定每一个词都要解释。总之解释中要体现出你理解原句就行了。

4. 长文缩短

Last Week of O levels!

So for most of you, the main bulk of the examinations is over. I really think we have put in a lot of effort together as a class in preparing for this large battle, so I applaud everyone's efforts and hard work =P But there is still one more week to go and that is probably a crucial week.

Set high aims for the MCQ papers. They may not make a very large difference, but the small difference it makes will give you a small but important advantage. Please practice whatever you have been given for practice. It will help.

The holidays are over and what little enjoyment you treasured has yet again dwindled into oblivion. CCAs are ending, thus leaving you with so much available time that your tickled heart tries to deceive your mind into taking a ‘break’ before mugging full force for the upcoming exams! Lessons and tutorials are beginning to end too; there’s nothing new left to learn for the time being and revision seems the only thing you are pre-occupied with now. The exams are… one day away? Are you prepared? Or are you panicking and beginning to contemplate suicide? Don’t you wish that time would be merciful and slow down enough for you to cram all that you’ve learnt for the exams, and yet wishing for it to accelerate quickly altogether so that this whole exam pandemonium would be disappear sooner? It’s so difficult to please the average soul.

I suppose the relaxation during the holidays is the primary impetus for us to keep going, a long-awaited and much anticipated break that is met by all with jubilance and enthusiasm. No matter what your drive is, the time has come again to park yourself down and flip open those detestable 3 inch-thick textbooks that have been accumulating dust for the past month. Resist the itch of playing DotA (Defense of the Ancients) and WoW (World of Warcraft), stop watching anime, re-stock your supplies of coffee, and let the mugging begin!

MUG! MUG! MUG!!!

This simple act as succinctly depicted by the 3 alphabets ‘M’, ‘U’, and ‘G’ has almost become a catholic high school culture, one that has integrated with our mundane lifestyles and has been subconsciously blended into our drilled minds, becoming not only a dependence in our lives but also an act of habit that we cannot do without, for fear of losing out to others. Just taking an unintended stroll around the school grounds will grant one glimpses of secondary school life in Catholic High, allowing one to observe the intensive preparations occurring backstage that give our school its prestige on the world’s stage. Fuelled by the knowledge that one is engaged in all-consuming race against one’s peers and by wisdom of the fact that they are also constantly improving themselves as well as learning more and more as every second passes, one inevitably resorts to the act of mugging.

To paint the definition clearly for everybody, mugging in this context is not referring to the undesirable act of an armed street robbery, but rather to a Singaporean colloquial term to describe intensive studying. In academics, mugging (also known as cramming) is the practice of working intensively to absorb massive volumes of informational material in short amounts of time. This has become an arithmetic trend not just in Catholic High but many other schools in Singapore. Mugging has replaced passion for sports and arts and has not only developed into a unique pastime of its own but has infected the minds of many and become a deleterious habit. A simple Google search on the word ‘mugging’ will lead one to encounter amusing yet very true results such as ‘Will mugging for long hours enable one to score good marks for exams?’, ‘I LOVE MUGGING!’, ‘Can somebody teach me how to mug pls?’ and ‘How to stay awake for mugging?’. ^[1]Delving deeper, one uncovers sacred techniques on the art of mugging and finds that ‘staying awake for mugging’ requires an exhaustive list of secret methods such as using Adderall, doing 20-30 pushups every night and bloating oneself with black coffee among others. I doubt these methods actually work, because if someone had actually tried them out he probably wouldn’t have survived it.

The quintessential question in mugging is the controversial ‘quantity or quality’ While some may argue that quantity should be attributed 100% priority in studying, studying smart is also vital. The key to mugging is not does not lie in the volume of information and resources that one ‘mugs’ but rather in the art and lore of selective absorption of information and mugging smart.

Obviously, just studying and studying and studying isn't going to do you any good if you don't actually know what's going on. To give a fundamental illustration, knowing the formula V = IR isn't going to help whatsoever if you don't know how to identify V(voltage), I(current), or R(resistance). Similarly, knowing that pro-opiomelanocortin neurons stimulate satiety and inhibit feeding isn’t going to help you at all unless you actually understand the regulation and control by leptin in arcuate nucleus neurons. ^[3] Understanding is a vital as knowledge is and probably even more so as knowledge without understanding cannot be applied and hence cannot be knowledge. Such is the knowledge paradox and if you don’t want to be entangled in its sticky webs of bewilderment, you therefore have to have the basic understanding of your knowledge. There is a saying that knowledge is power, but the fact remains that one might not know at all what to do with all that power, let alone comprehend the fact that he wields power in his addled-mind. Understanding the knowledge is where the true power and ability comes in. However, do not place all your emphasis on trying to understand the knowledge you have mastered. This is where studying smart comes in because at the same time, studying and studying and studying eventually makes you remember things. This is obviously very helpful, especially if you’re doing a subject that requires lots of factual information like biology and literature.

That being said, will mugging for long hours even help one to secure flying colours in his examinations? Yes, it has been scientifically proven by statistics that mugging does help to secure a pass rate and that one-night of pre-exam mugging is better than nothing, but by how much? Mugging can make one rush and feel preoccupied which helps by reducing that relaxed state of mind and complacency which tends to lead to lower-efficiency and reduced thinking capabilities, or as one may put it, mugging can help to kill the sin of Sloth. Sloth is a sluggishness of the mind and heart. Sloth paralyses our capacity for doing everything except what is truly useful. It is the reluctance to expend even the smallest amount of energy and effort to do what it takes to change things, to fix the brokenness around you and to do something about one’s decadence and atrophy of the mind. Sloth is a selfish trait of the tainted human character and works for itself, disregarding all matters and promoting low efficiency and degeneration. ^[4]

Mugging not only creates the atmosphere and passion for learning in the short span of time but also creates a net pressurizing force which drives one to work faster, and also think better with more creative chains of thought coupled with a strong sense of urgency.

However, mugging has been deemed by researchers and experts alike as detrimental to both a person’s physical and mental state. ^[5] One does not effectively retain information from mugging, and actually retains information less during cramming. There has been numerous research conducted using animal models that show us that the most effective way to remember things is going over it many times, with breaks in between. One who goes over things many times with no breaks, which defines the art of mugging, actually retains significantly less information than one going over it fewer times with breaks. There is a clear link between the ability of the brain to form memories and the amount of rest it is given between periods. As such, I would like to emphasize the importance of consistent studying rather than trying to ‘mug’ and cram our puny brains with the infinite expanse of knowledge in the limited amount of time. The phrase ‘burning the midnight oil’ should not be applied as it deprives you of sleep, rest and hence focus and concentration. Consistency is the key to studying smart in addition to the filtering of information.

Another variable in studying is the environment that one studies within. You can study anywhere but obviously some places are better than others. For instance, it is rudimentary knowledge to all and sundry that studying in a cacophonous, disorderly and obstreperous venue will lead to deteriorating inner-focus and lack of concentration and chi, hence inevitably directing one the dreary road to failure and depression. On the other hand, studying within a domicile which lacks the above mentioned distractions, providing a placid, congenial and tranquil environment for one to concentrate to maximum potential and work with optimum performance. The varied results are obvious and I highly recommend that you find a perfect place for yourself to lucubrate as soon as possible. A favourite studying hotspot and popular alternative venue for many would be the National or school library located in close proximity to Catholic High and thus being highly convenient.

Mugging in itself is a flawed culture and trend. People who mug actually tax their brains beyond what they can handle in that short span of time, the result being that they would forget everything that they would have learnt and would hence have to ‘mug’ the same things over and over again in a dull monotony, leading us to the common expression of the ‘no-life mugger’ that we brand many who have fallen into this pointless and vehement cycle of mugging. Mugging is a short term process that keeps repeating itself and serves only to expand ones knowledge in the next 24hours or so. If you care about what you are learning, it is the worst thing you could do to yourself because in the long-term it would only serve to deteriorate one’s thinking capacity, memory retaining capabilities and result in a highly dependable force of habit routine. So for all those out there who need to prepare for an upcoming examination, don’t mug last minute but try to remain consistent in your daily work from now until the examination. Effective studying requires utmost discipline from oneself so as to achieve proper time management and optimal thinking skills. Time is one of the most valuable and wasted resources to a student and has to be seen with high regard in this aspect. Effective thinking skills cannot be studied but have to be built up over a period of time. Some highly effective studying techniques are shared with students in Adprima.com and If you have the time, you should check them out. ^[6] However, the saying goes that one man’s meat is another man’s poison. Hence, it is up to one’s style, approach and potential that truly determines the effectiveness of his studies. Additional Eng Compre Practices

According to Sharepoint, Mrs Tang says that she will be printing out comprehension passages and answers for those who want to try the questions. I will be passing out a class list on Tuesday to collect the requests from the class.

I do not know how many additional comprehension passages she will be providing us, but I suggest that you do at least 3 or 4 additional ones on top of what Mr Heng is giving you. It will be impractical to finish all of the additional ones for sure, so just randomly pick any 3 or 4. (or just pick 3 or 4 together as a whole class)

The first one is the Eagles passage which has already been posted on Sharepoint. What we are lacking now is the answers. If you would like the answers to be printed out, either inform me now or tick the class list on Tuesday.

Last words...at the moment

Hmm as I say this, my stomach hurts. Real bad. Must be the effervescence caused by the food i shoved in at Seoul Garden...

But where was I? Ah yes. The final lap,the final run.

It is a real sense of deja vu. I clearly remember when I put the timers up on this blog, it was 130 days. 130 days. More than 4 months. And God, guess what? IT IS 9 DAYS LEFT.

Time really flies. I dont know what to say really now. I guess that it is time that we stop spiking each other, and for that reason, I wil not be posting anymore of that sort of wake up call. I guess we have all woken up.

And it will be a promise that this blog will be kept alive even until next year. That is a promise.

I hardly blog here, but since it's the last day of school, I just want to play a final small part and say something here.

Ok here goes...

Well firstly I am really thankful to be in this class, yep.

It's really fortunate.

We have fantastic teachers and classmates.

I think most of us, if not all, would agree that we had fun for the fun 2 years yeah =D

Well but nevertheless, someday such fun has to end, and tmrw's the so-called "official day".

Yup.

2 years just simply zoomed by so quickly.

It was like, 2008 was only yesterday.

Well, 2 years on,

this is where we are.

We braved the storms together.

We played hard as one, and we worked hard together too.

And now, it's just 11 days before the big "O"s, and tmrw is the Farewell Assembly.

Just want to thank everyone for being there all the time.

Last Day of School (official)

So tomorrow is last day of school... I know everyone of us has different feelings about the event, but I'm sure there is a sense of reluctance and surprise that time flies fast.

Well, I hope you guys know the plan for tomorrow. English remedial is still on at 7.05am. After that is class contact time and a VERY EARLY recess (Guys please don't eat anything. We want to starve so that we can make the very best out of our class fund money for the afternoon at Seoul Garden =P Unless you skip breakfast that is)

Then after recess is the graduation assembly, prize presentation, graduation video showcase (ahem) etc.

We will be having lunch at Seoul Garden Marina Square. Please change into your class shirt for that lunch. And I hope all of you know how to get there. It's either bus 162 from the bus stop outside (not opposite school) or MRT to City Hall and a 20 minute walk via Citylink and Suntec City.

And apparently some people in class are interested in having a KBOX session (there's a branch in Marina Square). Enquire with KCS for details.

Maybe I should say this, maybe i shouldnt...

today we got back our results. a mix of emotions i would say from the class. most of us were ok with our results, some were happy, some were disappointed. but i would like to say this...yes...a blatant point that is VERY STARK AND DIRECT.

you know, all of us would want to do well dont we? yet more often that not, it is the amount of effort we put in to achieving what we want. it is HOW BADLY WE WANT IT. I look around, I see and know some who are working hard and toiling towards their goal. Similarly, I see some who really WANT to excel, but somehow i feel that they are NOT putting in the effort.

i see this group of people talking about JC, subjects, career at times, yet they are putting the cart before the horse. let's talk about O levels. let's be pragmatic.

i dont want to really compare, but look at the work put in by mitchell...yea i know you will say he got no life or whatever related sort, but think again. WHY is he second in class, losing only to sheng mao? because he is pragmatic.

When did you ever hear him talk about JCs, career or whatsoever? before you dismiss it as having no life, STOP. take a step back and reflect. do you think people really dont care about what JC they are going to?

Its just that people like him RECOGNISE that the most important thing is to do well for the O levels, that's why they are putting in the effort.

You may be disliking me for saying this, but come one, GET ALIVE! its less than 2 weeks now.

my challenge to you is that you can actually continue to discuss about JCs, career, etc., but SHOW that you really want it. SHOW THAT YOU REALLY WANT TO DO WELL FOR THE O LEVELS.

We are down to the last few weeks of your O level preperation...

I reviewed your Physics grades for prelim 3 and I do have mixed feelings about it.

I am happy that your class has indeed done well for most subjects. For Physics I cannot ask for any more since we have 93% distinctions.

(The last 2 of you in the class can still catch up as I know you can make it.)

Warning that those of you below 85 could still drop.
My worse drop in 2008 was someone who scored A1 for 2008 prelim 3 (75%) and dropped to B3 in the O Levels!!!

My best improvement in 2008 was a B4 in 2008 prelim 3 to A1 in the O levels. (Think about it, one of the scholars in 4-3 was always doing quite ok for physics but dropped to the bottom because he got complacent.)

Do NOT be complacent!!!! You must be careful.

Do not burn out!!! I must warn you to watch your diet and stress level

3. English comprehension that Mrs Tang distributed today. Please also do the November 2002 Summary (refer to your ten year series that most of you should have). Both due Monday Morning.

4. Physics Victoria School 2009 Prelim Paper, Due on Monday. (Mr Yong said he would upload the answers though. I suppose its for MCQ. He may want to see and mark our paper 2 answers.)

5. If you have photos of classmates at any event, please burn them onto a CD and submit a copy to Mr Tan or Mr Yong as soon as possible. It's for the purposes of the Graduation Assembly which is on 16th October. Please submit the highest possible resolution copy if possible, preferably ones taken using full-fledged digital cameras.

6. If you concerns about Biology Paper 2 Essays, please see Ms Saras on Monday morning.

7. Monday's script-checking is as follows:

First 2 periods, English Literature Elective (Or the respective Electives). Literature is in one of the special rooms. For the other electives, refer to the schedule at back of the school hall.

Prelim 3 Results

Hey people...i know that some of u dont want to talk about the prelim 3 results...but just to hold some excitement...i know the results of the top few guys for chem prelim 3 yea.... cos i stayed back 2day to talk to some teachers and saw Mr Tan post up the chem hall of fame....

i can only remember a couple of names, but chances are if i remember your name, you are definitely on that list, and if you are not, well, chances are lower...

Yea...i think that's it from our class...by the way, sheng mao is not top...he is third or fourth on the list. The list stops at 85, so i guess the majority of us fall in the 75-85 range. Mr Tan also told us repeatedly to "dont worry be happy".

When asked what he meant, he said "let's just say you and I will be happy about the results"...

Yea so that should lift up our moods, especially for those guys who appear on the list above.

So hold your breaths as we continue the results release....P.S. for those ignorant guys, our E Maths, everyone but FOUR in our class got 85 and above---A1. For two of the four that didnt get A1, according to Mrs Tan, they are dam suay...cos they both got 84

hmmm....for me, i think that some subjects like biology...the idea the an A1 is no longer that exclusive and elusive cos more than half the class got an A1....talk about principles of economics.....no i am not being random,. but one principle of economics (which u will learn next year in JC) is the larger the supply, the lwoer the cost....the larger the number of A1s, the less exclusive it is..you get my point

but anyway, for those who didnt get the A1 or A2 or results as desired, do not give up....put in all the effort you can ever get remember..."i dont mean to be mr heng", but it is true that you can make the change this round....

There are no lessons on Monday... It's only for Chinese Literature People...

Hi guys...

did some research about our grad night locations and aroiund that area. I realised that the Swissotel rooms are almost fully booked and they are priced at a crazily expensive price of $220 and above for twin sharing. So my advice? We dont go there if we want to stay.

i suggest that we go the nearby (5-10 min walk) Robertson Quay hotel that is eons much cheaper and the quality...well...its one star less than Swissotel, but you pay less than half the price. The promotional rate is SGD$100++ for two people per night, inclusive of breakfast....sounds like a good offer

So that means you basically pay SGD$59 per person to stay for a night...much more worth it. I suggest that we book connecting rooms so that we can like get together and party out after grad night....noto nly cost effective but also realistic...by the way, i know some very good bars and pubs there.....

yea so discuss and pair up with your friend and let me know...i think group booking got discount...the more rooms we book, the better grounds we have for negotiations. i have relative working with the hotel, so i guess we can eke out some discounts....

Ok so Monday is Teacher's Day Celebrations. Here's the checklist:

1. Wear Class Shirt, Adidas one. Come on, show our teachers that we are proud to be in 4-3.

2. Buy Teacher's day gifts (or share the cost of one with someone else)

3. Pack light! There's only English and PE on Monday.

4. Make sure you know school ends at 12pm (rather late).

5. Do some studying before you get back to school on Monday. (Especially SS and History/Geography)

I think that my previous post has raised many controversial issues and discontent.

Let me clarify somethings.

FIRSTLY, IT IS NOT MEANT TO DEMORALISE ANYONE. If anything, why would I be doing that? What benefit do I get out of that?

To me , this is just a form of pushing, and TO ME, THIS IS CALLING A SPADE A SPADE!

Do you not think that I want to write otherwise? We all say that O levels is not really a big deal..bla bla...we shouldnty mug and kill ourselves studying.

Let me be direct.

WE ARE LIVING IN THE REAL WORLD TODAY. I am just stating the crude and harsh facts that you and I so clearly know. let's just say you and i refuse to accept it at times.

Whether you accept it or not is your choice, but i just feel it is better for me to voice it out. You can disagree and show discontent, but i trust that you will reflect on what i said earlier, and no doubt you will find it very true. Why? Because I am just stating the plain facts.

We all want ourselves to strive for the best. Yet if we dont push ourselves this final lap, then WHEN ARE WE GOING TO PUSH OURSELVES?

AFTER O LEVELS?????

Look,. now there is 60 days (or less) left. For 60 days, you trade off 2 years of fun and joy at a better school. Is that what you want? Once again, your choice, you choose your destiny.

AND IVAN, I AM NOT ASKING YOU ALL TO DIE IF YOU DONT DO WELL.

i am jsut stating the grim facts that we all HATE to accept and face.

On a lighter note, relax and rejuvenate over the teacher's day holiday and come fresh for Prelim 3....

Be the One Comforted or Comforting Others

This is going to be a serious topic that is sensitive, especially to the 4 guys who took Chinese. However, I will try to be as neutral as possible, whilst calling a spade a spade.

What do I mean? We have all seen how much our results can affect even the strongest of us all. Poor results and good results, I bet you have seen both. I do not mean to offend anyone here, but it is distinct and clear the differences in the class atmosphere on January 20 and August 19. If you dont know what these two dates mean, go fly a kite. They are the days when we got our O level CHinese results.

Two days, same subject, two totally different moods and atmospheres. Why? YOu answer yourself.

But what is my point? Ask yourself this question. Next year January,

DO YOU WANT TO BE THE ONE WHO IS COMFORTED BY OTHERS, OR BE THE ONE COMFORTING OTHERS?

I think what I say is quite crystal. You all know the underlying meaning. The question is, will you put in the effort.

While some of you are complaining about the lot of work we face, some of us ESPECIALLY LOUD COMPLAINS, think. Isn't all of us facing the same thing, if not worse? Why is it that some can do it and some cannot? Why is it that some of us DO NOT complain regardless of work received and face it positively, while others COMPLAIN and cry father cry mother?

WHY?

CHOICE. You choose. You choose how the work is going to benefit you. You choose whether you will be comforted or be comforting others. YOu choose whether you want to get the shock of your life next January.

YOU CHOOSE WHAT JC YOU WANT TO GO TO, BY THE ACTIONS YOU DO TODAY.

I mean it. In less than 12 days, Prelim 3 will be here. In less than 65 days, O level. TIME IS RUNNING OUT MAN!!!!

I know many of you are unhappy with how Mr Yong treated you guys just now in the morning. Unreasonable, as some will say.

You know what I think? I think that his way of doing things is a little too dominating, manipulative, and by ALL MEANS, I think that we should not raise our voices. But what is the purpose? He wants us to get the A1s!!!

How do you think that he managed to pull last year's double science class to nearly all As and even outdo some triple science classes? He means us well, and I think it is only right to do our work and TYS.

No, I am not speaking up for him. I am just expressing my opinions. I agree that one should not shout at us in class. But his motives are for the right reasons.

And think about it...some of us guys ALWAYS complain that we have not enough time. Hmmm I wonder why. We all have the same 24 hours, we all leave school around the same time, we all take the same number of subjects. WHY IS IT PEOPLE LIKE SHENG MAO DOESN'T EVER COMPLAIN ABOUT NOT HAVING ENOUGH TIME? WHY IS PEOPLE LIKE MITCHELL AND ANDREW CAN DO WORK WITHOUT FAIL AND EVEN HAND IN EXTRA WORK?

I am not defending them, but for heaven's sake, STOP CALLING THE MMUGGERS!!!. That includes me myslef. BE FAIR TO THEM!!! They put in the effort, so dont be sour grapes and just because YOU DONT HAVE THE DETERMINATION, IT DOESN;T MEAN THAT EVERYONE SHOULD BE LIKE YOU!

As I told you, i may sound offensive, but this is what I really feel. Stop gloating about how I am wrong and you should close this window right now. Think.

Next year when you get yout results, should you not put in effort and dont get decent results, WHO THE HECK IS GONNA CARE ABOUT YOU????

Of course, we will comfort you and the class, teachers and others will console you as you cry. But once you leave the sch0ol with the in decent results, NO ONE IN THIS WORLD IS GONNA GIVE A DAMM ABOUT YOU!!!

I think I am a little overboard and emotional now, but yea, that's what I really feel that you guys should really know.

In the year of 2008 A level, the following study was carried out. OUt of all the JCs, here are the percentages of what is the proportion of people who got at least 3 "A"s for their H2 subjects

In order of merit,

1. RJC 23.95% (means 23.95% of the whole population who got 3 As and above came from RJC)

2. Hwa Chong 18.15&

3. Victoria: 12.20%

4. National: 7.42%

5. Temasek: 7.05%

Final Reminders for Oral Tomorrow

After weeks of preparation, tomorrow is the BIG day... the oral for almost the whole class. This is what I want to share that I think may help you, no matter big or small.

1. Have a positive mindset.

If you are wanting to do well, have the positive mindset. Drop all the negatvie thoughts like "I will fail" or "I didn't prepare enough". Even if you did not do enough preparation, there is little you can do to remedy the situation. So, just have the poisitve mindset and tell yourself that "I am going to win".

2. Have a Good night rest

If you are reading this post later than 11.30pm, then you better go and sleep after reading this post. DO NOT BE STUPID. I will call a spade a sapde (quote edwin heng). Be realistic and sleep early. You think it does not matter? Well, if you are not well-rested, you will not be able ot give your 100% concentration and focus on the oral topics and passages and picture tomorrow. Furthermore, it is in the afternoon. So dont be stupid and sleep early.

3. Project yourself with confidence and clarity

During the oral, imagine you are Barack Obama, Martin Luther King or Lee Kuan Yew. Speak with the best clarity and conviction you have in yourself. Imagine that this oral is going ot decide your fate (thought it really will). Be sure of yourself.

4. DO NOT repeat your mistakes.

It is a mistake to repeat yourt mistake. Ironic? No it isnt;'. Be realistic. If you miss over one or two words in youtr passage, move on! As long as it sounds correct gramatically, chances are that you will not get penalised that much.

5. TELL YOURSELF THAT THE MARKS OF 35-40 IS YOURS!!!

While others worry about how much marks they get, tell yourtself, that no matter how much you got in the past oral, tomorrow, you ARE going to get full marks. YOU ARE GOING TO SPEAK BETTER THAN PEOPLE LIKE MITCHELL (and maybe me. :-) ) Tell yourself that you CAN DO IT!!!

Have faith in yourself. Whatever will be will be. There is no point to try to transform yourself into an "A" grade 10- hours before the exam. Leave it up to yourt best abilities to speak like an eloquent speaker.

Trust in yourself and you will succeed. ALL THE BEST!

Oral...Some Tips and Reminders

Oral is coming up, so I guess I sum up some tips and reminders from Mrs Tang and Mr Heng...

First, most importantly, BE CONFIDENT!!!!

Examiners judge you based on their eyes, and trust me, out of ALL of the exams, FIRST IMPRESSIONS matter the most in this case. When you walk in with sagging shoulders, shuffling your feet, how will the examiner portray you as? A weakling who cant even walk properly?

No matter how good you talk, you still wont be able to clinch high marks!

And according to Mr Heng which I totally agree with, for marks above 35 for oral, it is based on luck...

O levels.. The REAL Final Showdown

I need not say more.

Look at the sides of the blog to see how long more we have towards O levels. At the point of time when I am writing this post, its 100 more days....

Memories come rushing back to me since we first started this blog. In 100 days time, we will be put to the test, whether we can adhere to our motto: FINISH THE FIGHT.

I dont mean to contradict Mrs Tang, nor am i trying to separate the class, but I will be stark and brutal (quote mr edwin heng)...that this time, it is each man for himself. Like what mrs anna tan said, life still goes on. Should you no take ownership of this 100 days and not do well for the O levels (touchwood), at the most, your friends, teachers will comfort you for that one to two days.

Afterwhich, life goes on for us. No one cares about you. Seriously. We just go our own ways and leave you alone to suffer in silence for the next two years.

Sounds serious? Yep...how I wish that all of us could receive our results with the smiles on our faces we had on January 20 2009, when we got back our Chinese O level. Let us relive that moment, shall we? Let us fight for our own sruvival.

This is not not having class spirit. The quintessential way of displaying class spirit is to put in your best and help pull the class MSG up. If you tried you best and still fall below the MSG, no one will blame you. But trust me, you dont want to be the black sheep when next year Jan, when we receive our results, you are the one who pulls down the class and everyone boos at you.

So, wjhat I think we should do now, is to start up the engine to study, for those who have yet to do so. It is jolly BIG time that we spend less time on computer and lead a strict lifestyle. NO ONE likes it, NO ONE wants it, but EVERYONE has to do it. Yea...and let us strive to be the best in whatever we do.

Drill yourself like crazy and then enjoy the fruits of your labour...You have all waited for 4 years, dont let yourself down.

Yea... you all know that Yu Chen is gone. Well, our impressions of him vary greatly, and to some of us, he is an insignificant part of our lives, but yes, before our whole class prts, one of us is gone.

Especially for those who are often Yu Chen's "targets" and favourites, there is no doubt that there is a tinge of emptiness and sadness for a friend to leave already, before you know it.

But life must move on, and as much as we keep in touch with him, he too will keep in touch with us via blog, email, msn, whatever.

THe world is so small, you never know. It is afterall good to have a wdie network of friends worldwide. Some of us may just be going to US for our uni stuides. You never know. So it is worthwhile to keep in touch, not just because of benefit, but because to some of us, he is a close friend, and though he may be in US, but his spirit is forever alive in Singapore.

Some Matters to Note

Firstly, I hope most of you have received the SMS on your phone from "CH", the school mobile phone number as well as your relay system leaders (or the chairmen if you are a relay system leader). Do remember to bring your ODTs to school on Monday and report to the classroom at 7.30am.

Second, bring your mathematical set and long ruler on TUESDAY for the E Math paper. Only long ruler is required for A Math paper though (the linear law graph question).

Third, note that the reporting time for Monday is 7.30am. For all other days, it will be 9.30am or half an hour before the first paper of the day, whichever is later. This may be subject to change if there is a further need for temperature checks and other measures. Update: For those living in Bishan, do note that you must enter the school by the MAIN SCHOOL GATE. You should have seen that in the SMS that was sent out by the school.

Fourth, some of you may not have received the revision packages for Social Studies. Not to worry If you didn't get the revision package from Ngiap Seng on Wednesday Physics Lesson. Just download from sharepoint. As for the Geography revision package, please ask your friends for photocopies as there isn't any soft copy up for the moment.

Fifth, do rest and relax well throughout your studying sessions. Vitamin C supplements, Camomile Tea and other remedies may help. =P

Hihi, seeing the response to the jacket gave me some motivation to do something abt it hahas

this is my first draft, don't really like it though.. but i'll just post it up anyways so that u guys might get some ideas ;D

I'm gonna scrap it later to make a new one lols

Dear gentlemen,

I have uploaded suggested solutions to the November 2000 and 2001 papers for your class to check.

They can be found in the Physics Folder under suggested solutions to the Ten Year Series.

November 2000 paper was labelled as Class Test 1
November 2001 paper was labelled as Class Test 2

Do make use of the solutions prepared in your revision. Even if you do not use it, other "resourceful students" from other classes would do so.

I will upload more years after ensuring that you guys have tried the papers. It has been "painful and tiring" trying to mark the questions.

Remember that you should never resort to lazing around and work for the best...

Hi guys... I have contacted numerous dealers to get the best price...the cheapest so far is $25. Thats $25 before we use the class homecoming money last year. So i think its quite ok right?

Well, it will be black in color...and the design at the front is to be 2 colors, back to be 1 color. Note that we are ordering directly from a factory, thats why its much cheaper (dealers are selling at $29-$35), but the time to make is longer (3-4 wks)...So in order for us to get it done by prelim 2, please confirm with us whether you are fine with the decision by tomorrow, Friday during the last period.

Elgyn and Yeung Kai, can start with design?

Hi guys, the class jacket idea really appeals to me more than the class t-shirt stuff hahas. Anyways, for those that want to start designing the jacket already, feel free to use any one of the jacket templates below XDD remember to try to use a maximum of three colours for the design, designs are subject to class votes so goodluck with it :P Last but not least, I wanna wish all the chinese peeps the best for their chi O lvls coming soon and not forgetting the HCL dudes who have their prelims on Friday! Minna-san, Ganbatte ne! :D

Hey Guys, here are a few announcements:

1. Travel Declaration Forms - For those who haven't handed in your travel declaration forms, please bring and hand it in tomorrow.

2. $20 Homecoming Tickets - Please get the money ready, I'm not sure when Mr Tan wants to collect them.

3. $19 Biology Past-Year Papers/Assessment - Again for those who haven't handed in yet. TOMORROW.

4. E Maths Paper 2 Test - Some changes to the announcement made by Gwyn. Everyone is to turn up for the test tomorrow from 3.00PM - 5.30PM. No more choosing between Tuesday and Thursday. If you have a valid reason for not turning up tomorrow, let Mrs Tan know ASAP.
